Kate Bingaman-Burt reception is a success!

On the first Thursday of every month, the streets of the Pearl District in Portland are busy with people wandering from gallery to gallery enjoying a great diversity of artwork from around the world. Last week we joined the party by hosting a reception and celebrating the work of Kate Bingaman-Burt in Liquid Space PDX, our experimental gallery.

More, More, More: The art of Kate Bingaman-Burt.

The show features new works together with eight years of “Obsessive Consumption,” a collection of drawings that Kate Bingaman-Burt made over the course of eight years. Kate started her Daily Purchase Drawings as a way to contemplate ideas about consumption and to be more mindful of what she was buying (her massive credit card debt was another catalyst). After eight years she decided it was time to end the series and start something new. After 8 years, she had compiled 2,922 unique and often startling drawings. Her artwork has been featured in books, magazines, galleries as well as the popular NPR show Marketplace. Kate’s work has grown from its purely artistic origins and expanded into commercial illustration for clients such as IDEO, Chipotle, The Gap, and Car2Go. The show will remain up through the end of the year and Kate will have a number of special events over the next few months. Details below.

An inspiring show and a great reception party!

The reception officially began at 6:00pm, however, before we even opened our doors, people were lining the sidewalk admiring the windows (which Kate had covered with marker drawings of the many brands she purchased over the history of Obsessive Consumption) and the colorful display inside the gallery. Once the party was underway there were easily over a hundred people browsing through piles of drawings, posters, and zines. Kate was on hand to provide insights into her work and to draw objects that people had stolen as part of her newest project—Stolen Object Confessionals. In collaboration with Liquid, Kate also produced a show catalog printed on newsprint that literally includes every drawing from her 8-year Obsessive Consumption series. The catalog is free and includes a pull out poster featuring the identities of all the brands in the series. If you missed the opening, please stop by to pick up your free catalog.

About Kate.

kate05

Kate Bingaman-Burt’s work orbits around the objects in our lives: the things we buy, the things we discard, and the collectivity and social interaction that can arise from cycles of consumption. Via illustrations, daily documentation, publications, events, and large-scale participatory projects, Kate’s work invites a dialogue about contemporary forms of exchange.

Kate has been making work about consumption since 2002, teaching since 2004 and drawing until her hand cramps since 2006. Her first book, Obsessive Consumption: What Did You Buy Today?, was published in 2010 and her second book, What Did I Buy Today? in 2013 (both Princeton Architectural Press). She lives in Portland, Oregon, where, along with being an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University, she also makes piles of work about consumerism: zines! pillows! dresses! drawings! paper chains! photos! Starting in 2002, she photographed everything she purchased (finished in 2004). In 2004, she started drawing all of her credit card statements until they were paid off (finished in 2010). From 2006–2014, she drew something she purchased everyday. She also wants to draw your passwords, mix tapes, stolen goods, and yard sale signs. Ongoing photo projects include documenting sad, discarded thrift store crafts and Portland free boxes. She will also take a picture of the back of your head if you sit in front of her on the bus. Along with being an educator and illustrator, she frequently travels to speak and to conduct workshops at a variety of universities and organizations. Her work is represented by Jen Bekman in NYC.
