Helping a Silicon Valley success evolve its brand.
Meebo, a Silicon Valley startup, was launched as an Instant Messenger aggregator before companies like Twitter and Facebook became household names. As soon as people realized how easily Meebo connected them with their friends across the web, the company gained popularity. But that was just the beginning. A few years later, Meebo was at the forefront again, leading the next phase of social and the web. Meebo introduced a more comprehensive solution that enables people to share information across all of their favorite social networks while making websites more social and giving brands a way to engage with people online. As a result, today Meebo reaches close to 200 million unique visitors per month worldwide, and they’re still growing. Go Meebo!
Brand and business strategies must align for long-term success.
As Meebo grew, it became much more than an Instant Messenger aggregator, but that message hadn’t fully reached its target audience. Meebo wanted to align their branding with the new direction the company had taken. That’s when they contacted Liquid to help them and work on Meebo’s brand strategy and new messaging. All of us at Liquid were thrilled to get a chance to work with such an exciting company, and we have enjoyed collaborating with Meebo in crafting a brand strategy that leverages their success and is aligned with their business goals.

We began working on the brand strategy by doing research: evaluating Meebo’s current situation, learning about their business goals and plans and gaining an understanding of their product roadmap and the audiences the company seeks to reach. As the next step, we facilitated a Brand Compass workshop that included Meebo's top executives. Working collaboratively with the management team in an intense one-day workshop, we were able to quickly identify the key elements of their brand, including a statement that defines Meebo’s "onliness," and one that articulates their "purpose."
The first marketing project: A video.
As the next step in the process of evolving the brand we explored new directions for the brand's visual style and personality through a video that tells the Meebo story. It was important that we maintained the qualities that have made Meebo a likable brand to so many people. We produced a short video that communicates how Meebo's platform helps people all over the globe easily share content on the web and across multiple social networks. These are not easy concepts to communicate visually, and the challenge was to do it in a manner that made it effortless and fun while also getting the point across quickly and clearly.
Welcome to Planet Meebo.
Liquid developed the idea of Planet Meebo, a place where sharing content with all (or some) of your friends is easier – and more fun – than anywhere else. We crafted a visual style for the video that combines photography, illustration and stop motion graphics, allowing us to tell Meebo’s story and communicate ideas in a fun, playful way. We also created a set of colorful characters to represent Meebo's customers, and another set to represent a variety of social media and communication platforms.
Fun to watch, but packed with information.
The technique we developed for the Meebo video reflects the company’s lively personality and also allows people to visualize how Meebo's solution works and why it is the standard for sharing—not an easy task to accomplish. Meebo is using this video online to help its customers and partners better understand who they are, what they do and how they are different. The feedback has been extremely positive. Liquid continues to work with Meebo today, and we’re excited to collaborate with such an incredibly successful company.
