Marty Neumeier and Alfredo Muccino participate in Chile’s first Conference on Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

As part of Chile’s effort to jumpstart innovation, the government invited Liquid Agency to go to Santiago and participate in Chile’s very first Conference on Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Marty Neumeier and Alfredo Muccino had the opportunity to deliver two talks at TEDxPatagonia and give a couple of seminars on how to build a culture of innovation. However the highlight of the trip was a meeting with the President of the Republic to discuss how Silicon Valley innovation could transform the country of Chile. How’s that for cool?

ENTREPRENEURS LEARNED STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE GROWTH THROUGH HANDS ON WORKSHOPS DURING THE CONFERENCE.

The First Chile Conference on Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
The government of Chile has made innovation and entrepreneurship one of their top priorities, and to this purpose they organized the first ever national Conference on Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The conference took place in November at the same time as Chile Design Week and it included an exposition featuring resources for entrepreneurs, presentations by global experts on business and innovation, and workshops where local business leaders could participate in hands-on learning sessions. We’re very proud that both Marty Neumeier and Alfredo Muccino were invited by the government to deliver presentations and workshops. Marty Neumeier, our Director of Transformatiom collaborated with Cristian Montegu, the president of MagiaLiquid (our operation in Chile), and gave a workshop on Design Thinking to a group of almost 200 people. Alfredo Muccino, Liquid’s Chief Creative Officer collaborated with Pedro Ossa, one of the senior partners of Nivel1 (a very well respected business and branding strategy firm in Chile), and they delivered a workshop titled Creating a Culture of Innovation – where the attendees learned that it’s important to start with a clear sense of purpose and then learned how to eliminate the barriers to innovation that exist in so many traditional business structures.

MAGIALIQUID WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ENTIRE EXPERIENCE, INCLUDING THE DESIGN OF THE ACTIVITIES, THE SPACE AND THE GRAPHICS.

MagiaLiquid designs the conference concept and the exhibition space.
We’re also proud that MagiaLiquid was tapped to develop the brand strategy and creative execution for the conference. It was MagiaLiquid that first suggested that the conference should became a component of Chile Design Week. This idea helped connect the dots between “design”, “innovation” and “business entrepreneurship”. MagiaLiquid extended the identity work that they had designed for Chile Design Week and applied it to the conference. MagiaLiquid’s architects also designed the actual exposition space, which included temporary display spaces for the many resources that were on hand to support entrepreneurial businesses. MagiaLiquid also developed a process that helped businesses articulate their business plans and identify the areas where they could use the most support on their path to growth.

BOTH MARTY NEUMEIER AND ALFREDO MUCCINO WERE FEATURED SPEAKERS AT TEDx PATAGONIA.

Marty Neumeier and Alfredo Muccino deliver two talks at TEDx Patagonia.
TED is an organization that creates a stage for sharing ideas. TED’s tagline is “Ideas worth sharing”. The TED outpost in Chile is TEDx Patagonia – and Marty Neumeier and Alfredo Muccino were invited to present at TEDx Patagonia – which took place during the Conference on Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Giving a TED talk is quite an honor – and we were delighted (and a little nervous) to have the opportunity to share our ideas at TEDx Patagonia. Others speakers included our friends Eric Ryan (co-founder of Method soaps), TJ Scimone (founder of Slice) and Daniel Pandza (founder of PassionBusiness).

PRESIDENT PINERA POSED WITH THE INTERNATIONAL DELEGATION ON INNOVATION, INCLUDING MARTY NEUMEIER AND ALFREDO MUCCINO.

Meeting President Piñera was the highlight of our trip.
The week we spent in Chile was nothing short of amazing. As if launching our new office in Santiago and delivering the TEDx Patagonia talks was not enough, we had the honor to be invited to a meeting with President Piñera at La Moneda – the official residence of the President of the Republic of Chile. This was the first time that Marty and Alfredo had the chance to meet with a head of state, and it was quite an exciting experience. President Piñera is a multilingual Harvard educated former entrepreneur and university professor who has amassed one of the world’s biggest fortunes thanks to his successful business ventures. He was one of the owners of LAN (Chile’s biggest airline) and he was the man who introduced credit cards to his country. Because we came from Silicon Valley and because he wants to make Chile into a center for innovation, President Piñera was interested in our insight about innovation and transformation. During our meeting we had a short chat about design thinking and attracting and nurturing the best talent, then we drank some coffee and took a couple of pictures. In conversation, we were delighted to learn that President Piñera had read – and enjoyed – Marty Neumeier’s books! How cool is that? Take a look at Marty’s interview where he talks about his impressions on entrepreneurship and innovation in Chile.

Liquid Agency is proud to announce that we’ve opened our first office in Latin America. Based in Santiago de Chile, and operating under the name of MagiaLiquid, we are ready to export Silicon Valley innovation and support clients who have branding and marketing needs in the entire Latin American region.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: ALFREDO MUCCINO, CRISTIAN MONTEGU, SCOTT GARDNER, JOSE COVARRUBIAS. PHOTOGRAPHED AT MAGIALIQUID’S OFFICES IN SANTIAGO.

Liquid Agency opens its doors in Latin America.
According to Scott Gardner, CEO of Liquid Agency, “We recognized that the Latin American region offers substantial growth opportunitites for many of our clients, and we felt that it was important for Liquid to have a local presence. We are very happy to be now able to support our clients with an office that is part of the local culture, yet is fully integrated with our headquarters in the US and our office in Europe.”

THE CITY OF SANTIAGO IS A DYNAMIC AND SOPHISTICATED BUSINESS DESTINATION SET AT THE FEET OF THE MAJESTIC ANDES MOUNTAINS.

Santiago, Chile is the Silicon Valley of Latin America.
The new LATAM office is located in Santiago, Chile – a country that is considered the most technologically sophisticated in the region and one of the most progressive business climates in the world – and it is often dubbed the “Silicon Valley of Latin America”. The new office operates as MagiaLiquid and is the result of the integration of Magia Diseno and Liquid Agency.

THE MAGIALIQUID TEAM WORKS ON MULTIDISCIPLINARY PROJECTS FOR LOCAL AND GLOBAL BRANDS.

Magia Diseno was one of Chile’s top firms.
Magia Diseno was established as a strategic design firm over ten years ago by Cristian Montegu – who is now the President and Chief Creative Officer of MagiaLiquid. According to Cristian, “Magia Diseno has been widely considered  one of the most innovative firms in Chile – servicing important clients across all of Latin America and beyond – and we are delighted that we now are MagiaLiquid, after joining forces with the most respected branding firm in Silicon Valley”.

YOUNG, SMART, DEDICATED – THE MAGIALIQUID TEAM IS A FUN BUNCH OF PEOPLE TO WORK WITH.

An award-winning team of strategists, designers and architects.
The team of people that works at MagiaLiquid is made up approximately 30 extremely talented people, including brand strategists, designers, project managers and programmers. In addition, the Santiago office also includes a team of award-winning architects who are transforming the way that brands manifests themselves through temporary as well as permanent environments.

FROM DESIGN THINKING TO CREATIVE EXECUTION, MAGIALIQUID EMBODIES THE SAME VALUES AND USES THE SAME PROCESS AS LIQUID IN THE US AND EUROPE.

Same proven methodologies and same comprehensive services.
MagiaLiquid is fully integrated into Liquid Agency, using the same methodologies and delivering across the same service disciplines – therefore enabling us to provide consistency of services to clients who would benefit from an agency that has offices in multiple geographies.

THE CLIENTS WHO ATTENDED THE LAUNCH PARTY ENJOYED MEETING MARTY NEUMEIER AND THE TALENTED MAGIALIQUID TEAM.

A proper launch needs a real launch party!
During our travels to Santiago we discovered that Chile is a country where people like to celebrate life. And, when we recently launched the new agency, we certainly celebrated in Chilean style. The MagiaLiquid launch party took place at the prestigious Sport Frances – a beautiful private club in Santiago – where about 100 people gathered to help us toast the launch. The party went late into the night and was enjoyed by all the clients, press, friends and employees that attended – yet, much to our amazement, the next day people were at the office starting at 8:00am!!! There are a lot more pictures on our Facebook page. Check them out!

web_blog_reddot-header.jpg

The red dot design award, the origins of which date back to 1955 is divided into the three disciplines “red dot award: product design”, “red dot award: communication design” and “red dot award: design concept”. With more than 12,000 entries from more than 60 nations, it is the biggest and most prestigious design competition in the world today. The sheer number of entries and the diversity of nations represented makes this event highly competitive, so we are extremely pleased to announce that we have won our first red dot product design award!!!!

Alfredo Muccino and Scot Herbst collaborated on the design.
Alfredo Muccino, Liquid’s Chief Creative Officer, worked collaboratively with Scot Herbst, a multi talented industrial designer, to lead the development of a box cutter for Slice that is not only attractive, but also provides new levels of safety for the user. The team of people that contributed to the project was very small and included TJ Scimone, the CEO and Founder of Slice, and Alan Regala who provided the technical expertise to ensure the product could be manufactured efficiently.

Box cutter puts safety first.
Slice is a company dedicated to developing innovative products that cut, slice, chop, grate and more. The Slice Box Cutter is a perfect example of that commitment. The product’s innovations include the use of ceramic blades, the unique form factor, and the fact that it provides not only added convenience, but also a new level of safety for the users. Given that the Box Cutter is used primarily in industrial settings, this is particularly important.

Incorporating Consumer Branding Models into B2B Brand Marketing

law_blog_svbf-header.jpg

The latest Silicon Valley Brand Forum was hosted by Symantec at their beautiful Executive Briefing Center in Mountain View. The event addressed questions such as: Should Silicon Valley companies try to adopt the techniques used by consumer brands? What can tech marketers learn from companies like P&G and RJ Reynolds to make our own brand management more effective? What strategies are transferable and which aren’t?

law_blog_svbf-1.jpg

law_blog_svbf-2.jpg

Here’s a summary of the event’s highlights:

The Silicon Valley Brand Forum
The Silicon Valley Brand Forum was formed by Kevin Heney, who welcomed the participants and reminded the audience that the SVBF was established 10 years ago – at a time when tech companies believed that all they needed was technology. Tech brands have learned that technology innovation alone is not enough in today’s world, and now branding has become essential to create differentiation and to get traction.

Brands can use extensions and create verbs to build brands.
John Maver, from Maver Inc. is a former P&G veteran and Tide Brand Manager. He opened his presentation by shocking the crowd by saying that many B2B CEOs do not believe in “branding”. According to John, B2B CEOs believe that branding holds value only in B2C companies. According to John, B2B CEOs believe that the sales person is the brand…and all they need to sell is a set of data sheets.

John suggests that the brand is way more than sharing data sheets. John thinks that there must be an emotional experience with the product…and here are a few ways he said this can be achieved:

Extend the life cycle: Find a different use for the product
Create line extensions: “to go” version, liquid form, powder.
Establish a “persona”: Name/brand is recognized as objects (TiVO)
Become a verb: “I’m going to google it.”
Borrow some equity: Join forces with complimentary brands

Inventing a new identity that spans three brands.
Lisa Dardis Harrup, Symantec’s Director of Brand Strategy, introduced the new Symantec brand identity. The new design incorporates all 3 of Symantec’s brands: Norton, Veritas/Verisign, and Symantec. These three brands are brought together with a “circle check” symbol, representing both security and trust. This project was implemented from beginning to end in under a year’s time. Challenges include selling it internally, overcoming silos, and establishing the end result as a signet recognized and respected. Before the launch, intensive testing was done, and the new brand was very well received both internally and externally.

Panel Discussion
Greg Sieck, a 25 year veteran branding and marketing expert led the panel discussion part of the event. The panel members were:
Larry Vincent, Strategic Leader from Siegel + Gale
Martin Olivero, Senior Director of Brand and Design at Symantec
Allen Olivo, who has served as a Senior VP at various tech companies.

Overall, the panelists agreed that the key to a successful relationship with customers lies in fulfilling customers expectations with the brand. Dell was mentioned as example of a brand that has lost its “core”. Faulty motherboards, SEC investigations and mismanagement have damaged trust in Dells brand.

The panelists suggested that brands should find out what their customers think of them, and initiate an open dialog.  This feedback is essential to building a brand. Think more about creating Customer Delight than simply selling products.

This shift in conversation allows the relationship to be built on what a brand does and why it matters: Establish a value system and make sure that your company and/or brand does not lose it’s way. Find out what is more important for your organization: Is it the engineering or the customer point of view?

In B2B business there are often long sales cycles which make it tough to adjust to short term problems – Build a plan to make it happen – optimize you budget & build on successful areas. If your organization is flexible and tells a story it will be much more prominent in the market place – a story travels.

Making sure that the Brand Strategy and Brand Promise permeate the whole organization is crucial in order to creating the collective awareness needed to succeed.

Alfredo is invited to Colombia for World Graphics Day 2010.

 web_blog_pontificauniv-header4.jpg

Alfredo Muccino, Chief Creative Officer of Liquid Agency, has been invited by the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, a university in Cali, Colombia to participate in their celebration of World Graphics Day.

Alfredo will help lead a workshop involving students enrolled in the design program. The focus of the workshop is to create posters based on the theme “The Value of Design”. The program is being offered in conjunction with Icograda (the International Council of Graphic Design Associations).

The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana is a private higher education institution founded in 1623. It is one of the oldest and most traditional Colombian universities with its main facilities in Bogotá and a sectional division in Cali. Since its creation in 1950, the School of Architecture and Design has established itself as a leading center for learning about the habitat, communications and design. Many of its students, faculty and school management have received national and international awards and recognition.

World Graphics Day takes place on April 27, and has been celebrated annually since 1995. As a way to participate in this global event, the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana is inviting students to design posters that best express the theme. The exercise will be guided by the university faculty along with a select group of designers representing various parts of the world. Alfredo Muccino will be representing the United States. A panel of judges will select the top posters, and these will be submitted to Icograda, to represent the work being done by design students in Colombia. Alfredo will also hold a seminar to present the branding and design work that he has lead over the last 30 years and discuss the type of assignments that are being delivered by Liquid today.

“I’m very excited about getting a chance to speak to the students at this university. Their programs are very different than the ones offered in the US, and I look forward to sharing my experiences in the field, while learning about how designers are being taught in Colombia,” said Alfredo Muccino. “I am very excited to visit Cali and Bogota…and I am sure that I will return inspired and refreshed”.

Of course, most people know that Alfredo Muccino is an Italian citizen…but not many know that he was born in Bogota. He left Colombia to live in Italy when he was very young, and never returned. This will be his first time visiting his birthplace…which is another reason he’s excited about this particular trip.

Liquid Agency wins 12 ADDY awards.

law_blogh_addy09_100511.jpg

Liquid Agency took home 12 awards at this year’s ADDY Awards Gala, including two of the coveted ADDY Statuettes, representing work that was considered the best in its category. The ADDYs honor creative excellence by recognizing the best work of local agencies, as judged by a panel of peers. The party and awards ceremony was hosted by the Silicon Valley Chapter of the American Advertising Federation, on March 4 at the Marriott Hotel, downtown San Jose.  This year’s party was smaller than in previous years – a reflection of the tough economic climate – yet the mood was festive, as it seems that Silicon Valley is starting to show signs of recovery.

law_blog_addy_100510-2.jpg

Liquid Agency received a Best of Category ADDY award for the brand identity refresh we delivered for the Golden Gate Chapter of the Young President’s Organization – a global network of CEOs. The YPO GG Chapter includes mostly CEOs from the technology sector, so we created a visual style that reflects the dynamic and progressive nature of the members.

law_blog_addy_100510-3.jpg

“We’re happy that the judges have selected to give us these awards,” said Alfredo Muccino, Chief Creative Officer of Liquid Agency. “We participate every year because we believe that it is important to play an active role in our local creative community – especially during times like these, when many clients have cut their budgets and agencies have struggled to survive.”

law_blog_addy_100510-4.jpg

Once the awards ceremony had come to a close, we celebrated in true Liquid style with friends, family and some of the other agencies that participated in the competition. It was a night of camaraderie and friendship shared with many of the agencies that keep Silicon Valley a center of world-class creativity and innovation.

Below is a complete list of all the awards received by Liquid Agency:

Great design from our friends at WSDIA in NY.

WSDIA: A very talented group of people that take design seriously.

law_blog_wsdia_100524.jpg

On a recent trip to New York I was introduced to a small, but very talented firm: WSDIA.According to their website: “Our name WeShouldDoItAll (WSDIA) is simply a goal. Designers and all other professionals alike should not feel constrained to some singular expertise. To survive our own creative game, it is imperative to know that there is not one absolute solution to a given problem. To immerse oneself within different avenues of creative production and mediums forces you to consider the otherwise unconsidered. It’s that method of working that’s exciting and motivating to look forward to the next transition.”

Nice people. Lots of talent. And plenty of ambition.
I was introduced to Jonathan Jackson & Sarah Nelson, two of the three principals at WSDIA, by my very good friend (and also very talented designer), Chris Vivion. In the course of my travels and my work I meet a lot of designers. Sometimes I meet people who are exceptionally talented…on occasion I meet folks who are really smart…and at times I meet designers who are very nice people – alas, they’re personality does not always match up to their work. Meeting Jonathan and Sarah was refreshing because they represented a combination of the best qualities I find in true designers: talent, curiosity, passion, intelligence and ambition. On top of all these great qualities, they struck me as unassuming, approachable, and extremely nice people. BTW: By “ambition” I don’t mean a drive to make a lot of money. No, no, no. I mean the ambition to keep pushing the limits, and the desire to do bigger, better, more interesting and more meaningful projects. That’s the kind of ambition that people that end up being really, really good must have. And the folks at WSDIA have plenty of it.

New Practices New York
Jonathan and Sarah shared with me several projects that I thought were really smart and exceptionally executed. I really enjoyed the New Practices New York exhibition design.

This project exemplifies the firms ability to create striking solutions that blend the aesthetics of architecture and graphics in a combination that is visually fresh and dimensionally interesting. I learned that WSDIA is made up of people that come from backgrounds that include architecture, graphics and fashion…which may explain why their work is so multifaceted. I love the physical nature of the signage and the attention to detail that went into the execution.

Young Guns Live
Another project I really liked is the Young Guns Live project for the Art Directors Club of New York.

For this assignment the team created a set that they photographed as the key visual for the marketing materials. The typography was created from brown fabric and stuffed with cotton (now named, ‘Gotham Stuffed’). The end result is whimsical and sophisticated…and although it is definitely avant-garde, it evokes a certain level of craftsmanship that is not all too often part of today’s design aesthetics…which is what makes it so special and fresh.I look forward to seeing what this talented team will be designing next. In the meanwhile, if you have any thoughts, please feel free to share them.

Thanks,

Alfredo Muccino and Scott Gardner featured in Joe Claus portrait exhibition.

Joe Claus lives in downtown San Jose. He is a photographer residing in Silicon Valley, yet he likes to work with what many considered antiquated equipment…a film camera. For the last few months he has been building a portfolio of portraits of business people that work downtown San Jose. The range of his subjects is vast – both in terms of ethnic background, ages and types of businesses.

Metro-Alfredo

As part of this body of work, he shot portraits of Scott Gardner, the President and CEO of Liquid Agency, and his business partner – Alfredo Muccino – the agency’s Chief Creative Officer. The black and white portraits turned out great – and they are part of an exhibition titled “My Neighbors” currently being held at Dr. Martin Luther King Library in San Jose. Click here to find out more.

Alfredo Muccino’s picture was used to promote the event…which was very flattering to Alfredo.

If you’re in town, go see the exhibition. It’s been getting great reviews. Below are both Alfredo and Scott’s photos.

The Liquid Brand Breakfast

Brand BreakfastOn Tuesday, June 17 a crowd of brand marketers from a broad range of tech companies attended the Liquid Brand Breakfast featuring Tim and Ben Bajarin from Creative Strategies, who shared their insight about the future of mobile technology. The event is invitation-only and it was attended by senior branding and marketing execs from Adobe, Cadence, Nvidia, Intel, and other respected tech companies.

Tim and Ben Bajarin are from Creative Strategies – one of the most respected analyst and consulting firms in the valley.

Tim is the elder of the two and the President of the company – and he started the morning by giving us his perspective on the state of Silicon Valley. The good news is that – according to Tim – Silicon Valley is poised to remain the leading source of innovation on the globe. This is due not just to the culture that has been created in the valley, but also because of the infrastructure that has been built here over the last 25 years. And the next wave of innovation is all about mobility.

Ben is Tim’s son – although you would not be able to tell by the way he looks. He provided us with an in-depth evaluation of where mobile technology is heading – and offered the attendees with very valuable insights around the branding challenges and opportunities ahead. His presentation included some interesting examples demonstrating how companies can create brand experiences that are valuable and non-intrusive through mobile technology.

The presentation included a lively Q&A session where attendees where able to ask very specific questions about issues relevant to their companies or their interests. It was obvious by the nature of the questions that this topic was quite timely for all that attended.

To learn more about Tim and Ben Bajarin, please visit Creative Strategies.com. They are fascinating individuals who work with leading tech firms helping them stay ahead of trends.

Also, they’ve provided us with a PDF of their presentation, and you can download that right here.

To learn more about the Liquid Brand Breakfast and get on our invite list, please click on this link and we’ll be glad to let you know when we organize the next one.

As a note, I’d like to thank Ron Gonzales of Presencia Technology for being our sponsor at the Capital Club. To learn more about Presencia and the services it offers to its clients, please visit PresenciaInvestments.com

Lastly, if you have any comments about the topic of Mobile Technology and how brands can leverage it to reach their audiences in relevant ways, please respond to this blog – and we’ll be glad to keep the conversation going.

Don’t forget to check out our pictures from the event as well!
